Filipino Spaghetti


Ingredients:

  • 1 lb dried spaghetti
  • 2 Tb olive oil
  • 5 beef hot dogs, cut crosswise on a slight diagonal into 1/4-inch-thick pieces
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 Tb tomato paste
  • 28 oz tomato sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 Tb soy sauce
  • 1 Tb fish sauce
  • 1 1/2 tsp sugar
  • shredded cheddar to top

Instructions:

  1. Heat 1 Tb of oil, fry hot dog slices until browned. Remove from pan and set aside.
  2. Add 1 Tb oil, add garlic and cook 30 sec. Add onion and cook until soft.
  3. Add ground beef, bay leaves, salt, and pepper. Brown thoroughly.
  4. Add tomato paste and cook 1 min, stirring frequently. Add hot dogs, tomato sauce, water, ketchup, soy sauce, fish sauce, and sugar. Simmer 10 min.
  5. Cook spaghetti until al dente (1 min less than box instructions). Reserve 1/2 to 1 cup of the cooking water and add it to the sauce. Combine sauce and noodles. Serve with shredded cheese on top.
